Lock: Rapunzel Unhinged by Sarah J. Pepper
Genre: Adult/NA Fantasy
Source: Author (Always and honest review)
My Rating:  4.5 of 5 Stars

Rapunzel isn’t the stereotypical Damsel in Distress. Her Bad-Boy Prince Charming is a renowned mercenary, and their Happy Ending plays out like a bad movie. However, she is determined to breakout from her tower prison—love be damned—and do it in a fabulous pair of heels.
***
Gunned down by the Mercenary, the deadliest assassin in The Badass Archives, isn’t exactly Rapunzel’s end-game. Falling for him isn’t either, but his Rated-R demeanor is strangely charming. Even though most girls wouldn’t fall for their captors, Rapunzel isn’t like most dames. Her major girl-boner for the Mercenary is so pathetic it verges on cliché. Yet, in spite of his appeal, Rapunzel must escape before she’s locked away in the Château de Immortelle’s highest tower—forever.

Review

FIRST FIRST FIRST things FIRST! THAT COVER, THO! Yeah, all caps, peeps. This cover is FIVE STARS! When it gets done right, it needs an all caps intro on it.

Secondly, I'm struggling with this review because seriously, to say anything would be a spoiler. It really would be.  I don't fangirl over Sarah J. Pepper. We are not besties on the webs. You can check. So when you read this next bit you are to best believe it is truth. Sarah J. Pepper is truly a fascinating, talented, unique, and gifted writer.

You are immediately thrust into this very dark world. You are not told it is dark, you feel it. It doesn't take long to realize that this is not a Disney type of re-telling. In fact I think it does injustice to even compare it or call it a re-telling. It's so unique and different than what we know about the original fairy tale.  It is a complex world that will leave you feeling upside down many times. Most could give up on the complexity of it but I totally appreciate it and say keep going! There are many characters in this book. You never know which side they are truly on. Everyone has an agenda, history and secrets. There is action and lots and lots of pain to go with that action. The mind trips, the mysteries and the action don't let up until you get to the end.

I haven't read anything like this book ever. My brain hasn't been challenged like this since the last Sarah J. Pepper book I read and that one was a bit milder in twists than this one.  Forget what you know about Disney Rapunzel because this one is an amped up version of that one.... The only thing they have in common is that they both have a room in a very tall tower and have long locks. ;-)

P.S. This Rapunzel is for adults, I.M.O.,  although the sex (yes there is sex) is really tasteful (nothing crude). There is a lot of violence in this one. LOTS of it.

Meet Sarah J. Pepper

I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but
with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn't only filled with hugs, kisses, unicorns, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn't always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn't mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

Check out the other stops on the tour!
